About The Awareness Practice™ and Me

C. (Cynthia) Elizabeth Leach, MSW, LCSW, LMFT

The Evolution of The Awareness Practice™

My name is C. Elizabeth Leach, and you can call me Elizabeth or Liz. I am the principal and founder of The Awareness Practice™. It all began in 2012. At that time, I became inspired to launch my solo private practice in the state of New Jersey, from my years of experience as:

  • a psychotherapist, practicing within the scope of the disciplines of clinical social work and marriage and family therapy
  • an employee assistance professional (EAP), and
  • an executive and professional coach.

Fashioning the ‘Triskelle’ of Practice. Here, I bring all of these three client-facing facets together into one clear space: The Awareness Practice™. Already having maintained a successful private practice previously as a licensed clinical social worker in the state of Florida—where I lived in an earlier chapter—it was time for this facet of my professional life to re-emerge in a new locale in this new practice and ultimately to continue to develop and unfold into its present form. Here’s how the foundations of this practice’s evolution can undergird your moving toward your own emerging goals:

Building ‘Architectures’ of Awareness.

The ‘blueprint’ of The Awareness Practice™ was born from a singular purpose: To cultivate a dedicated ‘holding environment’ for discerning minds at a critical juncture in your life narrative as you cross over a threshold into a new experience of your own making and choosing. Offered in a caring atmosphere—clinical, EAP or coaching supports guide the way, as you discover ways to gain solid footing where you, in turn, can anchor and build your own foundation for new chapters.

Co-creating the Refuge for Reflection

Together, we have the opportunity to co-create the intersubjective space between us and infuse it with an atmosphere of clarity. As we explore together, you can begin to identify and move toward your own self-determined goals. The Awareness Practice™ can become a place for you to commence examining the internal and external ‘static’ that you feel may be holding you back.

As you embark on a process of sorting and sifting through the ‘baggage’ that is weighing you down and the challenges facing you in your world, The Awareness Practice™ offers the potential to become your own very Refuge for Reflection. Here, you can start to learn new tools and how to apply them, and more importantly to practice these in our space we share together, this refuge, before taking new approaches back out into the world… all while making your way along your own unique path of unfoldment as you move toward your own higher alignment with your ideal.

Moving through Practice Passageways to Unexpected Thresholds.

These can emerge within and transcend the containers of the Awareness Alcoves and Practice Platform. Whether you see me in one of my offices (the Awareness Alcoves of Princeton and Hillsborough) or in my Practice Platform on-line for a tele-session—each location has been designed with care to support a unique destination of your own that emerges from the liminal space between us, the Unexpected Threshold, the invisible and intersubjective Practice Passageway between us in which we can embark on this vital work.

“What happens in the liminal space is a profound undoing that makes way for an entirely new way of being.” ~ Unknown

Committed to Continuity: Evolving this Practice with Awareness.

The emphasis of what has developed here at The Awareness Practice™ continues to evolve—reflecting the emerging evidence base, directions, trends, and my interests in my expertise in the triskelle of my core practice areas: the clinical arena, EAP work, and executive/life coaching. My practice develops in a parallel process to the evolution of my clients—while our shared eco-system for this work can thrive when we each and all contribute to generating an atmosphere of trust, caring and connection as we move through changes together.

I Bring a Multidimensional Edge to What I Do

So, the cornerstone of my professional experience is the practice of psychotherapy, coaching, and employee assistance professional (EAP) work. Over the course of my career, I also progressed into leadership roles as well—an experience which deeply informs my work here at The Awareness Practice™ in these areas. A resulting expertise in what I do is serving executives and professionals and your families, knowing from lived experience how to navigate the complexities of corporate systems. The circles of higher education and academia are also familiar territories.

Since 2010, Awareness Communications® a separate entity, maintains a differentiated yet complementary scope of work from The Awareness Practice™, and benefitted from my years of corporate experience as well. It has also evolved to augment my private practice’s services with relevant workshops and events, continuing education for professionals, patient/client-directed education, and wellness-related and mindfulness education for general audiences and those of healthcare organizations and non-profits… rounding out the full spectrum of my on-going initiatives.

…and accompany you on the great adventure of you being you.

My Bio

As the Principal of both The Awareness Practice™ and Awareness Communications® for over a decade, I presently serve as a psychotherapist, Employee Assistance provider, executive and life coach in private practice at The Awareness Practice™, as well as retreat guide, educator and consultant at Awareness Communications®. My Awareness Alcoves, or convenient in-person locations are in Princeton and Hillsborough, New Jersey, while I am also easily accessible on my Practice Platform for Tele-sessions. In addition to over 15 years of direct client-facing practice experience, I have led teams for at least the same amount of time as an executive, director or management consultant in a range of healthcare and social service settings. For many years, for example, I served as a director at Princeton House Behavioral Health and in other areas of Princeton Healthcare System. At the Wellness Community of South Florida, I also served as a Community Relations Director and a psychotherapist with cancer patients and their families.

Educational Background

With a masters degree in Clinical Social Work from New York University (NYU) and a bachelors degree with a concentration in Comparative Religion and Cultures from Brown University—I have taught graduate and post-graduate students at NYU as an adjunct professor and guest lecturer—including topics on cross-cultural practice and spirituality in clinical practice. As a clinical social worker, I am greatly influenced by empowerment and strengths building models with clients as a central precept of my work, as well as social justice and helping clients address trans-generational traumas and overcoming internalized oppressions when these are present. A noteworthy experience was my internship at Marymount Manhattan College Counseling Center, and I have years of experience in clinical work with college and graduate students.

Academic Interests and Clinical Orientation

My academic explorations and early training offered core foundation in drive, ego, object and self—and balance the depth of psychodynamic, existential, psychosynthesis, intersubjective, psycho-biographical and insight oriented approaches to psychotherapy, while balancing these with being informed by practical, skill building methods such as Cognitive Behavioral, Dialectical Behavioral, Acceptance and Commitment, and Internal Family Systems, and so on.

Theoretical Lineage

A key influence in my early training was professor Jeffrey Seinfeld, known for his work in spirituality in clinical social work, and his work on integrating object relations, existential and intersubjective philosophies into clinical practice. He supervised my master’s thesis I wrote on cross-cultural approaches to working with diverse clients from an intersubjective and psycho-biographical lens. One of my noteworthy field advisors, at NYU was Professor Eda Goldstein, known for her contributions of weaving models from ego psychology, self psychology and object relations into the standards for clinical social work practice in the practice of psychotherapy in this context as we know it today.

My approach is heavily informed by psychodynamic methods, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), solution-focused, and a considerable array of relevant integrative approaches from the growing evidence base.

My conceptual framework relies on a rich intellectual lineage: I look to the foundational work of Jeffrey Seinfeld, PhD, and Eda Goldstein, DSW, as well as the work of David Olsen, PhD, known for his integrative family therapy, relationship renewal model, and contributions to preventing and treating burnout, as described below. I have had the great good fortune of studying and learning from many other acclaimed thought leaders, to whom I am grateful but who are too plentiful to enumerate here in this brief snapshot. It is important to recognize that the discourse of the field is dialogic and that we all grow and deepen in community to advance our field together. Want to say thank you to all my mentors and teachers, who are all appreciated!

Since the beginning of my career, I have worked with executives, professionals and their families, as well as college students and persons from diverse backgrounds in individual, family, couples and group modalities using customized approaches from a rich tapestry of theoretical traditions and with a solid foundation from the evidence base.

Post-graduate Early Clinical Career Experience: Spanning Psychotherapy, Coaching, Employee Assistance and Organizational Consulting

As an integrative marriage and family therapist, I have refined skills from this discipline and its evidence base derived from Bowenian systems theory, structural, strategic, solution-focused, and narrative methods, and further informed by emotionally-focused, Gottman, Imago, and relationship renewal models. My supervised experience early in my career was directly under David Olsen, MSW, LCSW, LMFT, PhD, a nationally renowned family therapist who wrote Integrative Family Therapy, The Couples Survival Workbook, and When Helping Starts to Hurt, on Burnout, and who developed the relationship renewal model as an extension of Bowenian Family Systems therapy. While working with Dr. Olsen as my direct supervisor in the early part of my career following the completion of my master’s program, I became fluent in translating systems theory into the understanding of organizational behavior as related to actual practice in the four arenas of psychotherapy, coaching, EAP work, and organizational consulting. Burnout and compassion fatigue treatment and prevention for executives and professionals is a foundational skill from this experience. Further, I continued to refine my approach to spirituality in clinical practice in this setting where Dr. Olsen was fluent in this area as well. It was under Dr. Olsen that I learned executive and professional coaching as a part of my core skills set.

Employee Assistance

Presently affiliated with several Employee Assistance Programs, I am known for my work with executives and professionals and their families in the context not only of EAP work, but also psychotherapy and executive coaching, as well facilitating seminars and workshops.

Approach to Spirituality in Clinical Practice

When addressing matters of spirituality, as relevant or requested in my work, I believe that spirituality is our inner landscape and language of purpose and meaning in our lives. When invited into a dialogue of spirituality, I join my clients within your own context, whether it is in the lane of the world view of scientific positivism or from the perspective of whatever faith or tradition system may be meaningful to you. Your purpose and meaning is treated as ‘sacred’ whatever its flavor or container at The Awareness Practice™, and I am honored should you wish to delve into such deep matters here with me. Doing so is optional, and only if it serves you and your goals in your own preferred context.

Other Interests

I have completed intensive trainings and received multiple designations from an array of spiritual programs in the interest of deepening in mindfulness, spirituality and the understanding of ancient wisdom traditions and related philosophies. How ancient wisdom is, at times, connected to the growing evidence base of my fields is fascinating to me. I am an ordained minister of the Universal Worship Service with an advanced ordainment in spiritual caregiving and enjoy offering celebrancy through weddings, funerals, house blessings and so on. I have completed a two year alchemical retreat guide training and certification to lead alchemical retreats, as well as a two year healing retreat guide training. My publications include “The Psychology of Self in Sufism” in the Journal Sufi, co-authored with Terry Graham, and also co-authored with Dinesh Sharma an article on optimistic universalism and social justice in the life and works of Rumi, Wordsworth, and Mazrui in The Journal of African and Asian Studies. My poem, “Dohm Alley Musings” was included as a part of a several-year outdoor Romantic Poets Exhibit in downtown Princeton. For many years, I served on the Art for Healing Committee of Princeton Healthcare System, and have an ongoing interest in the growing evidence base of the healing impact of art and the arts on mental health and healthcare. I believe this interest is palpable in the architecture of this website.
